Pressure Relief Valves Design Steps
Proper design of Pressure Relieving devices is a complex and time consuming task
involving a significant number of Process considerations.
The results of Safety Devices calculations for hydrocarbon processing facilities
also require to be extensively documented in order to properly perform Hazop,
submit relevant documents to Authorities and Plant Owners for their review and
approval and future reference during plant operation and / or revamping.
Pressure Relief Valves design process can be summarized as shown in the
following four steps. PSVPlus is bringing all these steps in one single software
application.
STEP 1: Define the applicable emergency scenarios, compute the relieving
flow rate for each of them and estimate the fluid physical properties at
relieving conditions.
Step 2: Determine the applicable API equation, select the proper type of
PSV and calculate the orifice for all the relevant emergency scenarios.
Finally, select the sizing case for the PSV orifice.
Step 3: Perform PSV Inlet and Outlet lines sizing and check consistency
between specified and calculated pressure relief valve back-pressure
terms.
Step 4: Prepare the specification sheets to be issued to the Vendors for
PSV inquiries and purchase. Also prepare reports to document that due
diligence has been conducted in PSV calculations and to provide a basis
for Flare Headers sizing (Sumary of Relief Loads).
